Smith County Multi-Modal Facility

The NET RMA, in cooperation with Smith County and the East Texas Regional Transportation Partners, is conducting preliminary planning for a Smith County Multi-Modal Facility (MMF) to be constructed in downtown Tyler. The MMF will consolidate and focus several transportation elements at a central location and allow for increased connectivity for residents of Smith County and the East Texas region to access other areas of Texas and the nation. Available transit services at the MMF are proposed to include Greyhound and Kerrville Bus Lines and charter bus service, transportation to Amtrak train stops in the region, a transportation shuttle between the MMF and Tyler Pounds Airport, Tyler Transit, a park and ride lot, rural transit services provided by East Texas Council of Governments (ETCOG), local medical and para-transit vans and taxi service. In the future, light rail connections to a Dallas – Shreveport High Speed Rail System are proposed.

Key attributes of the Smith County Regional MMF will include connectivity between multiple transit modes; shelter from elements; lighting and public seating; information/way-finding (kiosk or staffed service); bike storage/facilities (lockers, pods and bike station); pedestrian crossings; multi-level parking structure located adjacent to the facility; space for taxi stands; accommodations for passenger drop-off and pickup; supportive commercial/retail and food vending services; driver facilities and bus bays; enclosed climate-controlled waiting area; real-time visual displays and voice announcements of transit information to assist riders with their trips; ticket vending machines; state-of-the-art access and egress to the facility and internal circulation at the facility; and free internet access.
